The off-timetabled day, Revision Day, returned earlier this month for its fourth instalment where pupils had the opportunity to attend workshops, explore different revision techniques, and devote time to independent revision.
With internal exams commencing this week, Revision Day is an important day in the College calendar that helps prepare our pupils for this week’s exams, as well as future assessments.
Exams and assessments are almost guaranteed during a pupil’s academic journey, and so it is important that pupils are equipped with the skills and techniques that will enable them to study and revise effectively. More often than not, a barrier to revision could be not knowing how to revise and Revision Day aims to break down that barrier.
Interspersed throughout the day were workshops from Positively You, one of the UK’s leading providers of educational workshops and resources. The workshops were presented in an age-appropriate way, and it was fantastic to welcome back Positively You’s revision expert, Jay, to the College. Familiar to those who have been with us at the College, Jay used his wit and humour during his workshops which covered:
- Year 7/8 – Study skills
- Year 9 – Motivation
- Year 10 – Goal setting
- Year 11 – Exam busters
- Year 12 – Bridging the gap
- Year 13 – Exam mastery
Assistant Head (Learning and Enrichment) and organiser of Revision Day, Mr Shaw, said:
‘The revision day takes pupils off their regular timetables and devotes the day to equipping pupils with the tools they need to revise. This includes an understanding of memory and how to optimise our approach to revision, a guide to motivation - helping pupils get into the right headspace to revise, as well as learning techniques. The day also provides pupil with the time to sit down and prepare revision in time for informal end of term assessments in December, as well as January Mocks for pupils in Years 11 and 13.
We have also introduced a revision page to our website. This page offers access to essential revision materials tailored to upcoming assessment periods. It will be updated at key points in the academic calendar: November (for all year groups), January (for Years 11 and 13), and June (for Years 7 to 10, and Year 12). Alongside subject-specific revision lists, there are links to comprehensive revision guidance and parent presentations designed to support effective revision strategies. Be sure to check back regularly to stay informed and fully prepared for each assessment window.’
To help parents in supporting revision and independent learning we also ran a presentation led by Mr Jones, Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Shaw, Assistant Head for Learning and Enrichment, and Mrs Farrell, Head of Sixth Form. This took place on Wednesday 20 November where parents joined for a short talk exploring effective revision and about the strategies and support already on offer to the pupils. Although aimed primarily at parents of pupils in Years 11 and 13, all parents were welcome to attend. A recording of this event can be found in the Weekly Bulletin (21 November 2024).
