With internal exams in full swing this week, we catch up on the recent Revision Day that helps prepare our pupils for this week’s exams, as well as future assessments.

The off-timetabled day, Revision Day, returned last month for its third instalment where pupils had the opportunity to attend workshops, explore different revision techniques, and devote time to independent revision.

With exams and other assessments almost a certainty during a pupil’s academic journey, it is essential that pupils are equipped with the skills and techniques that will enable them to study and revise effectively. More often than not, a barrier to revision could be not knowing how to revise and Revision Day aims to break down that barrier.

Interspersed throughout the day were workshops from Positively You, one of the UK’s leading providers of educational workshops and resources. The workshops were presented in an age-appropriate way by Positively You’s revision expert, Jay. Using his wit and humour, Jay was successful in engaging with the pupils during his workshops which covered:

  • Year 7/8 – Study skills
  • Year 9 – Motivation
  • Year 10 – Mind mapping
  • Year 11 – Exam busters
  • Year 12 – Motivation
  • Year 13 – Exam busters

Assistant Head (Learning and Enrichment) and organiser of Revision Day, Mr Shaw, said:

‘Recently, we hosted our 3rd annual Revision Day. The revision day takes pupils off their regular timetables and devotes the day to equipping pupils with the tools they need to revise. This includes an understanding of memory and how to optimise our approach to revision, a guide to motivation - helping pupils get into the right headspace to revise, as well as learning techniques. The day also provides pupil with the time to sit down and prepare revision in time for informal end of term assessments in December, as well as January Mocks for pupils in Years 11 and 13.

Every year, students up and down the country moan, “I don't know how to revise” and I do think parents, and teachers alike, can think of revision as something to figure out for yourself. Here at Shiplake however, we know that learning to revise, and self-regulated learning, is a skill that can be honed and refined - thus the annual Revision Day.’

Revision Day doesn’t stop there though! Tomorrow, Friday 8 December, we will be hosting a revision presentation for parents. This will run through helping your child prepare for exams, what techniques are most effective, the amount of time that should be spent on revision, and how to support your child with exam pressures. The event will be forty-five minutes to one hour long and will run between 3.30pm and 4.30pm in the Lecture Theatre. The event is predominantly for parents of Year 10-13 pupils but is open to all parents. We hope that with the event running just before the Year 13 parents conference that those parents with appointments will be able to attend both events.
