In response to the upcoming reform to A Levels, the College has given much thought to identifying the best strategy for our pupils moving forwards. After considerable discussion and deliberation, we firmly believe the decisions we have made are in the best interests of our students, and will allow them to achieve the best possible results in their Sixth Form studies.
Shiplake will not be offering new AS Level qualifications in reformed subjects. The reformed A Levels are intended as two year courses, and AS Levels are offered as concessions to schools unwilling to change the structure for students. Whilst undoubtedly valuable over the last few years, AS Levels are now assessed differently and do not ultimately count towards the A Level qualification.
In light of this, we have decided that continuing with AS Levels in reformed subjects would be counter-productive. Shiplake will therefore be offering reformed A Levels, based on a linear course structure, to take advantage of more time for exploration and deep learning. The Headmaster has commented that the College ‘feels strongly that our pupils will benefit from more time learning, and less being tested.’
We have outlined below our strategy on A Level reform, in a short video by Director of Studies, Mr Ian Munro.
