As the Summer Term began, our Sixth Form girls (and plus ones) gathered together for the annual Girls’ Sports Dinner; an awards evening dedicated to recognising the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the girls in all sporting endeavours.
The girls received a visit from guest-speaker Rosie Allison, who, at just 23 years old, plays for the England netball team. Rosie was particularly impressive for the girls, as she has managed to juggle academic pursuits alongside her sporting career, allowing her to study for a Masters degree. A very motivating speaker, Rosie gave the girls an illuminating speech about the power of teamwork, and the inspiration she finds in her fellow teammates, and the girls were very moved. Pupils and staff gathered together to enjoy a sumptuous meal whilst the awards were given out. Sports captain Eleanor Waite and Head of Girls' Games Mrs Emma Armstrong were on-hand to distribute the awards, congratulating winners on their accomplishments.
The girls have had another season of development for netball, coming together as a team and showing an unparalleled ardour for their sport. In fact, over half of all the girls at the College played netball this academic year, making for record-breaking numbers! Hockey was also popular with the girls, with Orla Brown representing the College 1st XI. Our sportswomen are looking forward to another successful season next year.
The evening was rounded off with a speech from Director of Sport Mr James Gaunt, who commented that ‘the girls have shown incredible hard work this past term and I’m very proud of them- they never wavered, even when the opposition was a far bigger school, and they were a credit to the Shiplake name!’
