Mathematics Trips & Visits

On Monday 12 October, all of Years 7 and 8 piled into a coach in order to enjoy a day trip out to Legoland, Windsor. Organised by the Mathematics department, the trip included a number of different, mathematics-themed workshops throughout the day. Accompanied by Mathematics teacher Mr Peter Muhley, the pupils were in high spirits as they departed the College grounds, leaving the classroom for a theme park!

The pupils partook in workshops during the day. A particular favourite was a workshop based around pulleys and gears, where students had to create their own gear and pulley system. However, what at first seemed like a simple task was made all the more difficult by their materials; being that they were in Legoland, the systems had to be made entirely from lego! This seemed a far cry for usual maths tasks, and the boys were highly creative, eager to see how their designs would come together and the outcome of their final project.

A variety of other workshops took place, which were primarily focused upon computer coding. The pupils had to control two robots, and input instructions which included angles of motion, and revolutions of circles. This certainly proved a challenge, but the boys were determined to design outstanding programs for their robots, impressing Mr Muhley with their focus and attention to detail. It was a superb day for the Lower School Mathematicians, as they departed exhausted from the challenges but filled with great enthusiasm!
