Houses Rowing

On Friday 11 December, Shiplake’s Director of Rowing, Mr David Currie, held a House Ergo Competition. All pupils were invited to participate in the event, which saw teams from different houses and year groups compete against each other to gain victory and bragging rights! Teams from each House were chosen and they headed to the Sports Hall in order to take part. Teams were also split into different year groups.

The event had two parts to it; firstly, each competitor had one minute in which to row as far as possible, with the total distance from each person added up with their teammates. The team with the furthest distance rowed was declared House winner! A relay event was also held. From each House, a Year 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 participant was put forward to complete 2112m as quickly as possible between them.

The event was a huge success and enjoyed by all who took part; the atmosphere was electric, and the House spirit was fantastic. For the Year 9 teams, Burr House was victorious. Welsh won from the Year 10 and 11 teams, whilst Skipwith Eggar won for Year 12 and Burr for Year 13. Welsh House was victorious once more amongst the Senior Girls. The overall House Ergo Competition winner was Everett House, whilst the House Ergo Relay champions were Burr House!

Mr Currie said of the competition that ‘it was brilliant to have everyone involved in a rowing event, really giving it 100% and fighting for House glory.’ As the Spring term approaches, rowing takes a front seat and crews ramp up training ahead of regatta season. This was an ideal way to close the term, leaving excitement around the sport and rowers keen to get back into training come January.
