Sixth Form Academic

Year 13 pupil Matt Brown has long been a keen computer scientist, and, as he reaches the end of his career at Shiplake, Matt (currently studying A Levels in Computing, Mathematics and Chemistry) has been considering his options. With the plethora of options available to pupils leaving Year 13, which path to follow come September is not necessarily an easy decision. However, for Matt, his passion for the subject of computer science has inspired him to apply to arguably one of the most highly competitive internships available; a Digital and Technology Solutions apprenticeship with J.P. Morgan Chase.

Over 1500 young people apply for the internship each year, which is a staggering statistic! J.P. Morgan is a leading global financial services firm, and one of the world’s largest banking institutions. The apprenticeship is one of a broad range offered by the company, and is specifically designed for post Sixth-Form and College students who are eager to launch their career within technology in the financial services industry. The program is a comprehensive introduction into the world of technology, offering on-the-job experience as well as training and the chance to obtain a full honours degree. As it is such a competitive apprenticeship to get, Matt has undergone a rigorous application process. After an initial application, there were six rounds of varying tasks to complete: from networking, to psychometric tests, to video interviews. Matt travelled to JP Morgan’s technology hub in Bournemouth to undergo many of these tests, and this is where the majority of the work is based. He has been chosen as one of the final 11 successful candidates.

Matt now faces the difficult decision of accepting the apprenticeship, or pursuing a degree in Computer Science. Having been accepted onto four year courses at Loughborough University, Southampton University and Royal Holloway University, Matt is in the fortunate position of having different options for when he leaves Shiplake at the end of this academic year. With passion, enthusiasm and drive like his, we have no doubt he will be successful in whichever path he chooses to take!
