The Exemplum Docet Society has been set up to provide academic enrichment opportunities for those who are in receipt of an academic scholarship. The society is also open to pupils who have been identified as exceeding expectations in the classroom, showing an open and committed attitude to learning. There are pupils from a range of year groups involved, and the group enjoy such events as trips and external speakers. On Monday 13 March, a group of Year 9 and 10 pupils travelled to the heart of Oxford, to visit the colleges of the world-famous Oxford University. Thank you to Deputy Head Academic Dr Gareth Hughes for the report:
‘15 Year 9 and Year 10 members of Shiplake Exemplum Docet Society attended a day at Oxford University on Monday. The aim was to inspire some of our younger pupils to aim for the top end universities in a few years’ time. The boys visited Christchurch College and were treated to a tour of some of the private grounds, hall and accommodation areas. We then visited the School of Geography and the Environment, seeing some of the laboratories and equipment used in research. Following a visit to the world-famous Pitt Rivers Museum, where the pupils saw Indian shrunken heads, life sized dinosaur skeletons, and an impressive collection of ancient weaponry, amongst other delights, we finished our visit with a tour around the idyllic grounds, chapel and gardens of Worcester College. A great day was had by all, and needless to say the unique Shiplake blazers made a big impact around the city!’
