On Wednesday 24 May the Year 12 BTEC musicians showed how far their skills had advanced over the course of a year studying the subject, in an intimate concert for parents and staff in the Lecture Theatre. Organised by Mr Byron Ward, the evening was to showcase the pupils’ work, and counts as part of their final BTEC grade.
Fergus Howard-Jones opened the evening, playing a range of pieces on the piano, including Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi. Following his accomplished performance, Robbie Rayne impressed audience members with a repertoire of four songs. Robbie sang a variety of pieces, from traditional folk songs to pieces from popular musicals, ensuring that there was something for everyone to enjoy and showcasing his impressive range. Juan Elkington was next in the spotlight. Juan first played a piece on the piano entirely from memory, before picking up the bass guitar to cover such popular bands as Red Hot Chili Peppers. Will Kidd was the last to perform, playing a range of pieces on the piano.
Mr Ward commented: ‘the popularity of the Music BTEC is growing although this is still a small class; there is a lot of pressure to perform a large range of pieces and the pupils have worked really hard to ensure that they were able to do this. They have performed beautifully and it has been a pleasure to see them all grow musically over the course of the academic year. This performance will go towards their final grade, and the class have done really well to keep the nerves out of the way and perform to their best of the abilities.’
