Last week, more than 50 Year 10 Geography students traveled to Dorset to collect coastal data for their iGCSE controlled assessment. The trip saw pupils compare the beaches and other coastal landforms at Hengistbury Head and Lulworth Cove while also taking in the sights of Stair Hole and Durdle Door. The region is well frequented by the Geography department and as ever, Mr Johnston had pre-booked the fine weather for the two-day trip.
The students spent a day at each location measuring beach profiles, pebble size and angularity as well as measuring the rate of longshore drift. Pupils were chaperoned by their respective Geography teachers who have expert knowledge on the Geology and Coastal Management at each location. The students will now write up their findings in a 2000 word Geographical enquiry which will be submitted to the exam board and represents 27.5% of their overall Geography grade. Students at Shiplake often produce some very detailed reports, which showcase the enthusiasm and effort they have for their subject. As well as this, the trip helps students to better understand coasts, and enhances their prior knowledge which will only benefit them in their exams next year.
Mr Johnston would like to praise the good behaviour of the students and thank in particular Mr Duncan, Mr Mallins, Mr Howorth and Mr Nel for their support on the trip.
