On Tuesday 17 April, four Shiplake students travelled to Wycombe High School with Mr Lehane-Kendrick to compete in the regional final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. Representing Shiplake were Year 8 Pupils Toby Broadbent, Gordon Fitzgerald, and Matt Grundy, and Year 9 Sam Waller.
The Team Maths Challenge is a team competition designed to challenge the most able of Mathematicians. With questions written by academics from the UK’s leading universities, including Oxford, Warwick, and Bath, our students were bound to be stretched to the very edge of their ability.
The day started brightly with Shiplake scoring a decent result in the first, group, round. The second round was the cross-number, often the most frustrating round. However, Shiplake put in a phenomenal effort to leave us in the top five teams at lunch. The afternoon proved a little more difficult, with the shuttle round proving a worthy challenge. The final round was the relay, which was again a difficult task.
Shiplake finished the day 13th out of 21, finishing ahead of several more selective schools. While disappointing after the high of the morning, this is a result we can be very proud of. All the boys enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and showed Maths at Shiplake is going from strength to strength.
