Just before half term, thirty pupils and staff took part in the Sue Ryder It’s A Knockout Challenge to raise money for the fantastic charity based in Nettlebed.
Two teams from Gilson House and one from College House took on the challenge, which comprised of inflatable obstacles and other tests of physical and mental agility. Among the College House team The Shiplake Seven Plus One was Brett Fullard, who provided the report below:
'On Sunday 20th May, eight boys from Year 13 took time out of their busy academic schedule to form the 'Shiplake Seven Plus One’ group and compete in the ‘It’s a Knockout Competition’ at the Sue Ryder Hospice at Joyce Grove, Nettlebed. The event consisted of multiple activities, all designed to test mental and physical agility for which, of course, all of our boys were on top form. Whilst the event was for charity, there was no shortage of competitiveness from any of the attending groups, which only made for a more hilarious viewing in such outrageous activities. The fantastic weather, food and atmosphere contributed to an all-round enjoyable and laughable day for both the contestants and spectators.'
On the winning team, The Stingers, was Gilson House Matron Lou Porter. She commented ‘It was so nice to see that everyone had a real give-it-a-go attitude and my teammates and I spent the whole day laughing! Not only was it a really great day, but it was all for charity!’
The two teams from Gilson raised £600 and the College House team raised a further £300. The event raised a total of £2000, which will help to provide expert medical care and emotional support to people who have received a life-changing diagnosis. Well done to everyone who got involved.
