At the weekend, Teacher of Politics Mr Dickey accompanied three pupils to the University of Oxford to take part in the Model United Nations, where students roleplay UN delegates and simulate committees.
Joe Rayner, Charlie Bradshaw and Estelle Thomas participated in the conference and were charged with representing Uganda, which used to be governed by ruthless dictator, General Idi Amin. During the event, students were treated to a lecture by Sir Mark Lyall Grant who was the UK’s National Security Adviser and, previous to this, the Ambassador to the United Nations. Students also debated a number of current issues facing the UN, such as disarmament of the Korean Peninsula and the governance of the internet.
Mr Dickey, Politics teacher at Shiplake, commented, 'Our students got the opportunity to learn about the way the UN works and what it is like to represent a country and defend its foreign policy. They also met a lot of other enthusiastic students from all over the world who shared their passion for global politics.'
