Last week saw pupils and staff observe Shrove Tuesday and the annual Pancake Day race.
The matrons in house treated pupils to pancakes at break time, and even more were had for dessert at lunchtime, thanks to Thomas Franks Catering.
The main event came a couple of hours after lunch: the traditional Chapel Wardens vs Prefect Pancake Race. The rules are simple; both teams take part in a head-to-head relay race between the zebra crossing between the John Turner Building and Burr House, and the end of the driveway. Runners must flip their pancakes once before running the length of the course and handing over the pan to the next runner.
Both teams, made up of Year 13 pupils, did exceptionally well but victory ultimately went to the Prefects.
In the evening, Rev’d Stephen Cousins led the pancake supper and Bingo evening, with the help of Mrs Cousins, Mrs Knight, Mrs Higgins, Mrs Fairbairn and Mrs Kernaghan. This is the seventh year that the Rev has organised this event and it has grown year by year.
It was a very successful evening, held in the great hall with over 80 students eating more than 200 pancakes! The evening started with a pancake tossing competition between Dan Anstey (Head Chapel Warden) and his deputy, Oscar Rait. After the pancakes, there were two “full houses” of bingo with Iona Wasdell student winning an Easter egg and Bobby Howard-Jones from Welsh winning a Tuck Shop voucher.
