This week, we had a conversation with one of our Heads of College, Estelle Thomas, who is an excellent role model for any aspiring pupil to become their best possible self.
What are you studying and why?
I’m studying Psychology because I find the human mind really interesting and I like how you can apply it to everyday life. I’m doing Business because I love how businesses have the potential to make a positive impact on the world. And I’m studying Photography because I love the marketing, branding and visuals for a business.
What do you like most about being at Shiplake?
I love the atmosphere, it’s always so happy, everyone’s so friendly. It’s like a big family, really supportive and there’s always such great opportunities.
What is your favourite co-curricular activity?
Well I’m just about to go and play a hockey match! I love hockey. There’s always something different to do and there’s opportunities to try lots of different things, I’ve done cookery and DofE which I really enjoyed.
What surprised you most about Shiplake when you joined?
I think how authentic it was. And how a school can actually be like a family. Every school tries to claim this but Shiplake really lives it.
What do you do when you’re not at school?
I have a small granola healthy food business where I supply cafes throughout the year, so I’m often working on that. I’m always thinking about new ideas and I work directly with the cafes I supply to work out new recipes. I’ve recently just launched a new product, a protein granola bar so we’re going to see how that goes. I of course also love to spend time with my family and friends.
What are your future ambitions?
I’m going to apply to university to study Business Psychology. But I’m also going to apply for degree apprenticeships because I really like actually using what I learn in real life. I will look at companies like L’Oreal where I really admire their values. I will also take a year out to travel first and gain loads of experience and then take it from there.
What advice would you give to someone who’s starting at Shiplake?
I would say you can’t compare yourself to anyone, you are your own unique person, and I think you have to embrace you and not measure your success by comparing yourself to other people.
Who would you say is your hero?
I love Oprah! I love her content and often listen to her podcasts to wind down or on a walk or run. I love that she takes wisdom from lots of different people. I love hearing how other people have faced different challenges and overcome them. And her advice. I find it really helpful.
Who’s your favourite teacher?
I actually love all my teachers and they’re all so different that you can’t compare them! For example my Psychology teacher Mr Shaw is incredible but equally Mrs Mordue who teaches Photography is amazing.
