What better way to tell you how we celebrated National Poetry Day than with a rhyming couplet or two.
An Ode to National Poetry Day
Today as our pupils sat down for their lessons
They may have been surprised at the start of the session
As their teachers were speaking in verse or in rhyme
Quoting some of the greatest poets of all time.
For today is National Poetry Day
It takes place each October across the UK
Our teachers were challenged by the English department
‘Start each lesson with a poem, a sonnet or a lament’.
So our teachers took on the challenge without fear
Reciting Homer, Wilton, Blake and Shakespeare
We’ve heard from modern poets like Lasky and Wright
All genres covered – to inspire and delight.
Poetry can have such a positive effect
It helps pupils unwind, relax and reflect
It aids creativity, improves thinking, unites
Develops emotion, supports writing, excites.
So thanks to our colleagues for this task they embraced
And it’s fair to say that every one of them aced
‘Teach by example’ - the Shiplake way
We really enjoyed National Poetry Day!
Thanks to our Alumni and Relations Officer, Catherine Brazil for this fantastic poem!.
