In our last 'A Conversation With...' of the half term, we had a chat with adventure loving Mr Oliver Parker who joined us as a Graduate Teacher of Humanities in September. In his spare time, you will probably find Mr Parker climbing a mountain or swimming in the Thames, even in the middle of winter... brrrrr!
How long have you been at Shiplake and what is your role(s)? Where were you previously?
I began at Shiplake in September and I am a Graduate Teacher of Humanities. This year, I teach our Lower School history and geography. I also coach sport, assist with Outdoor Education and CCF and, along with Mr Alcock, run the Christian Union.
Previously, after graduating from Bristol University, I worked for a Christian charity that runs summer activity holidays.
What is the best thing about Shiplake?
Without a doubt, the people. It goes without saying that if there weren’t any pupils it really would be a rather unexciting and fruitless job. Also, I really didn’t think I would make any friends in the common room that quickly. How wrong I was! The College really is a community.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I can’t think of many jobs where I can enjoy so many things that I love and get to share those with others. I also absolutely loved school myself and hope I can help pupils say the same.
What sparked your passion for geography and what is the best thing about teaching the subject?
Growing up, I found in geography a subject that both satisfied my intellect but also my adventurous spirit. It quickly became my favourite subject at school and remains so to this day! I love helping pupils see that geography, at least to begin with, can explain almost everything that happens in the world.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love adventures, big and small, especially with friends. Whether swimming in the Thames at Shiplake before school, or planning a mountaineering trip in the summer holidays. I also love reading books about other people's adventures. People who go much higher, further and longer than I can.
What is the first thing you will do when we get out of lockdown?
I can’t wait to jump in the car to see my sister who is studying in Edinburgh.
What does the future hold for Mr Parker?
Certainly the most significant thing is that I’m getting married this summer! To be honest, I’ve not thought very much beyond that. Although, a friend and I have begun the roughest of plans to start a men’s clothing brand. Watch this space?
