Features Parents' Association

In our final 'A Conversation With...' of the Spring Term, we talked to the Chair of our wonderful Parents' Association, mum of Harrison in Year 12, Mrs Cindy Harper. The PA has been spending lots of time planning some exciting events now that Covid restrictions have eased, with the first being our Platinum Ball on 25 June.

What does the PA at Shiplake do and what exciting things have you got coming up?

The PA has a mission to support the school community. Post pandemic it has been one of our key goals to bring people together again. This has been successful this year with strong year group reps to communicate to families: Christmas Fair, coffee mornings, wine and cheese evening and our Platinum Ball on Saturday 25 June - tickets now on sale! We also have a coffee afternoon coming up on Friday 6 May.  Everyone welcome for a coffee in the fantastic Marjorie's Cafe in the Sixth Form Centre - a treat from the PA.

What drove you to join the PA and what do you enjoy most about it?

I have always been passionate about supporting the schools that my sons attend and as a teacher myself I know how important the community of parents can be in supporting the work of the school. We are an independent school but the importance of community and charity are key for the wellbeing of our children and ourselves. The PA group that includes members of the school staff are fun and helpful and supportive, I count myself lucky to be part of the team.

As a parent, what do you love most about Shiplake?

Not in any specific order: the routines, the sport, the teachers, the housemasters (Everett specifically), the caring attitudes of all, the grounds of the school, the sporting opportunities, the rowing, the food, the friends my son makes, the other parents, the leadership and more!

What do you do outside of Shiplake?

My favourite things to do are walking my dog Bella (a three time winner at the Shiplake dog show!), spending time with my family and doing a job I love, working with young people who want to be teachers.

Tickets are now on sale for the PA Platinum Ball, can you tell us more about this event?

The band that is booked is AWESOME - Boujee Music - look them up! We have some amazing prizes and dinner looks delicious. I promise a fun night - book your tables ASAP! All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Chiltern Centre in Henley that supports young people with disabilities.

As well as being a fantastic social event, the ball is a very important fundraiser, can you tell us more about the charity element?

The Chiltern Centre is local and supports young people (aged 16–30) to gain valuable social and life skills so they can grow in self esteem and independence and gain fuller access to the local community. Shiplake pupils have access to first class facilities and this is important for all young people to achieve their own personal best.

What would you say to anyone considering joining the PA?

Come Join Us! We are a new team and all are welcome as no contribution is too small! We have a good laugh and being involved with the school is so rewarding. Research has shown that parental involvement has a very significant impact on a child's achievement and attainment at school - so why not?
