Last week, on Monday 18 September, our GCSE geography pupils travelled to West Wittering on the Sussex coast for the department's first field trip of the academic year. The following is a write-up of the trip courtesy of pupil Seb Crehan Mills:
'Bright and early on Monday 19 September, a very enthusiastic group of GCSE geography pupils embarked on a field trip to West Wittering on the south coast of England.
When we arrived, we were firstly greeted by some wind and pouring rain, but as the keen geographers that we are, we marched on and immediately started our analysis with the help of members of the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
With a lot of complicated equipment including some ranging poles and quadrats, we began our analysis of the angle of the beach and sand, pebble, and shingle percentages. After a surprisingly fun beach profile test and a job well done, we swiftly moved onto our next test - The Longshore Drift test. With a baton, rope, wet socks and shoes, we threw a rope attached to the baton into the sea to see the strength and direction of the Longshore Drift. Of course, all results were collected and noted down.
A trip undeniably made by Miss James’ enthusiasm, Mr Burrows’ cheerfulness, Mr Cooper’s intelligence and Miss Gayler's optimism. Thank you to all for organising!'
Geography teacher Miss James added:
'Spending a day on West Wittering beach was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to experience field work and data collection first hand. This will be vital for them for the fieldwork questions in their Paper 3 exam. We were very impressed with the boys and their hard work, even through a massive range of weather throughout the day! All our data collected has complemented our studies of coastal processes and management and the pupils have enjoyed reflecting on their experience of the day. A great day out, made even better by the help of the lovely staff at the Chichester Harbour Conservancy!'
