In today's Sports Report, we get the latest news from the world of rowing, tennis, and cricket. In Rowing, there was much success at the Reading Amateur Regatta with three of our crews taking victories; tennis saw our junior players do well at a tournament; and in cricket, our Year 13 pupils took on the staff in the annual College and Gilson vs Staff matches!
Rowing – Reading Amateur Regatta
Our rowers were in action just down the Thames at the Reading Amateur Regatta last weekend. It proved to be a highly successful outing with three of our crews taking wins in their respective categories! For many, it would also prove to be good preparation ahead of Henley Royal Regatta. The boys’ 1st Eight – consisting of B Brooks, J Duggan, E Galer, W Harper, A Rhys Jones, H Day Clark, J Barnes, I Dean and cox M Walker – overcame crews from Auriol Kensington and Monmouth School to take home the trophy. The boys’ J16 Coxed Four of W Tavinor, I Powell, O Bennett, R Evans and cox C Watkins took the Jane Club (UK) Trophy by beating crews from Wallingford and Bryanston School. Finally, in the Colonel Field Challenge Trophy, our boys’ Coxless Quad – consisting of O Smee, C Wallis, J Meiswinkel, and O Nash – defeated crews from Twickenham, Windsor Boys School, and Reading BC to claim the trophy. Well done to all rowers who competed at the event!
Tennis
We took a team of Year 7 pupils Polina Brown, Archie Humphries, Ethan English, and Joe Hunt to take on The Oratory, Pangbourne, Crosfields, and Leighton Park in the annual Oratory Singles Tennis Tournament. After some great wins and some very evenly contested matches, Shiplake were crowned champions by winning 62 out of a possible 80 games. A massive well done to all four players who were not only phenomenal in their play, but represented Shiplake College in the best way they possibly could.
