Artists Take Over Oxford
Art

Before the Easter break, on Wednesday 20 March, our future GCSE art students embarked on a trip to The Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford to spend a day collecting and creating artwork that will help them with their future studies.

Teacher of Art, Miss Platt, was on the trip and writes the following:

‘We left Shiplake early in the morning and we arrived at The Natural History Museum to begin exploring the two floors filled with natural forms, skeletons and taxidermy. Here, students took part in a series of drawing tasks enabling them to practice and refine their observation skills. The Year 9s thoroughly enjoyed being up close with a range of insects, dinosaur and animal skeletons, and were even given the opportunity to touch some of the taxidermy available including a brown bear.

After exploring The Natural History Museum, we went to The Pitt Rivers Museum which houses an extensive range of artifacts and collections of thousands of objects from different periods of time. The students were broken up into groups to explore the three floors to enjoy the space and to refine their drawings. Students completed some well executed tonal and biro studies of a range of artifacts including textiles, masks and ceramics.

The afternoon was spent outside in the sunshine after the pupils enjoyed their lunch sitting outside the museum. They were able to spend this time showing each other the outcomes they had created throughout the day. After lunch, we explored the historic architecture in Oxford, drawing some of the Oxford University buildings nearby and the outside of the museum itself.

The Art Department would like to thank the students for an outstanding day out and we look forward to teaching you in GCSE art. We would also like to thank Mr Jones and Mr Grover for assisting on the trip.’
