Sports Report

Today's Sports Report includes the latest news from a variety of sports. In Tennis, our Colts got their season underway with a strong performance against Pangbourne while our senior girls also got their season underway in rounders. In rowing, we had a large number of rowers across all age groups competing over the weekend and, in taekwondo, there was European success for Year 11 pupil Alex Kami Hawkings

Taekwondo

Congratulations to Year 11 pupil Alex Kami Hawkings who was part of the England team competing at the European Taekwondo Championships in Slovenia.  He competed in three events: team patterns, team sparring and individual sparring where Alex and the team won a bronze medal for team patterns. Overall, England came 5th out of 33 participating countries.

While he has competed at national level for several years, this was Alex’s first European event, and his first selection for the England team. Well done Alex

Tennis - Colts vs Pangbourne

Last week's Colts' tennis fixture saw Shiplake take on Pangbourne College. This consisted of 5 pairs taking to the courts to play their first competitive school tennis matches of the year. Shiplake were a dominant force throughout, winning 14 out of 17 matches before the day got called short due to rainfall. With players from Year 10 and 9 teaming up, it was great to see so much talent in action.

A big well done to all boys involved, and we look very strong heading into our next few fixtures.

Rounders

Year 13 Girls vs Holyport

On Wednesday 1 May, the Shiplake Year 13 girls played their first rounders match of the season against Holyport. Shiplake were first to field with O Parkin delivering some great bowling with some brilliant catches coming from F Lenthall and R Acton. The girls all worked well together in the field, helping each other get the ball to the stumps despite some big hitters.

It was then Shiplake’s turn to bat where all the girls gave it a go. There was some brilliant batting from G Wyndham Smith, A Botterill and many others. Along with the positive attitude and excitement, the girls played well with a well-deserved Player of the Match going to G Wyndham Smith for her fantastic fielding and bowling. In the end, Shiplake won 18-12 and the girls were ecstatic. The team had a great time in this match and are looking forward to future games. Thank you to our coach Miss James!

Year 12 Girls vs Reddam House

On Wednesday 1 May, the Shiplake Year 12 girls played their first rounders match of the season against Reddam House. Shiplake were first to field and stopped lots of balls which prevented Reddam House from getting rounders. Everyone was exceptional with their fielding, especially T Gillard for her bowling and I Davies-Shearing for fielding. It was then Shiplake’s turn to bat with A Flower opening the batting and scoring a rounder!

In the second innings, the score was much closer, and our fielding was much stronger as we worked more as a team with T Gillard catching a ball and A Flower and F Short stumping lots of people out on second and third base. Our batting was also much better in the second innings and I Davenport-Thomas batted excellently. It was a great first match of the season and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and worked as a team. Our well-deserved Player of the Match was I Davenport-Thomas who played exceptionally well today. Unfortunately, despite a lot of hard work and fun, Reddam House just beat us, but the girls are super excited about the upcoming matches. Thank you to our coach today - Mrs Morgan.

Rowing - Chiswick and Wallingford Regatta

We had a number of crews competing this weekend with our senior crews racing at the Wallingford Regatta at Dorney Lake. The College entered crews from J16 to J18 with 10 boats taking part. The event served as great preparation as we continue to get set for National Schools Regatta later this month.

At the Chiswick Regatta however, there was success for our J14 8x+ who, despite only training on the water for a couple of weeks prior to this event, put in a fantastic display to come 2nd in their final. Along the way to the final, the crew beat Brentford School, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, and Emanuel School, which is a fantastic achievement considering their lack of training on the water. We look forward to seeing more of them in action! Well done to the following pupils who competed: A Bowater-Rubio, E Grubb, J Swankie, J Calow, A Lee, O Spearing, S Lee, B Maggs, and Cox P Newton.

A further congratulations must be said to two of our senior rowers - William Harper and Emily Downing - who did a fantastic job of representing GB Rowing at the Munich International Junior Regatta. Harrison took home two gold medals in the men's sweep, while Emily took home a silver medal in the women's sweep.
