Academic Geography

Last week, Shiplake College hosted the Geography Worldwise Quiz for the second time. As current cup holders, the pressure was on for a repeat of last year, but thanks to strong competition from Claires Court and Cranford House schools, the hosts did not have it all their own way.

The questions, organised by the GA (Geographical Association) were typically tough but the variety of rounds suited different skill-sets and kept things interesting to the end. After an entertaining evening, Shiplake’s efforts were only good enough for a share of second place as Claires Court claimed victory.

The rounds  took the teams from Landmarks of the UK to Fieldwork Techniques via The Commonwealth. Multiple teams from all three schools made for a competitive learning atmosphere in the OVR. Support from parents and staff ensured a thrilling contest. After ebbing and flowing for long periods, the final result saw Claires Court win comfortably after their fantastic general knowledge in the Mixed Bag round.

Organiser Mr Duncan reflected on another successful evening: “The quiz is an excellent social event, which has now claimed a permanent place in the school calendar! I wish to thank all involved and am most grateful for the support of Barney Aldridge and his team of Skipwith boarders for marking the answers. Special thanks to the ICT staff and catering for help with setting up and providing much needed refreshments for spectators, staff and participants.”

In the battle for second place, there was nothing to choose between teams from all three schools. This bodes well for another exciting contest in 2015 where the Shiplake boys will be keen to reclaim their trophy.
