Pupils from Year 7 computing classes found their ingenuity and innovation put to the test, when they were briefed to create a TV news programme featuring stories of their own choosing from the news section of the Shiplake College website. The classes were split into groups and had to work independently to choose what stories to cover for each segment, and how they would go about creating the stories.

Groups were hard at work over the course of a few weeks, choosing people to interview for their stories and working on ways in which to present the stories, so that they had the authenticity of news stories. Once they had completed the initial planning stages, the groups had to write their own scripts and film the footage on their phones. Amongst other skills, the task helped to show the boys how to use their phones effectively when learning in the classroom. The next task was to upload the footage to the College computers and spend time editing it. The pupils had been learning how to use different editorial software during class and Mr Adam Dimmick, who had set the task, had put together a variety of tutorial videos for the boys, to assist them with the task. The videos were then submitted and marked by Mr Dimmick, who had the difficult task of awarding a first place. The winners of the competition were James Braun, Jamie Liu, Milo Connolly and Jude Harris. The winning video was very thorough, complete with opening credits. Second place went to Archie Arnold, Henry Poustie and Tom Petrie, and third place was awarded to Anthony Adamson, Jai Angell and Jake Molony.

Mr Dimmick commented: ‘the videos went above and beyond what I was expecting, and I am particularly impressed with the first place video! The group really got stuck in and taught themselves loads of techniques through the tutorial videos. They were working on it practically every lunchtime! A very impressive effort indeed.’
