Year 9 pupils presented a range of projects to parents as part of their Further Project Qualification (FPQ), last Friday (17 January).

Overseen by Mrs Sally Bayley, Thinking Space Manager, an FPQ qualification involves a practical project, which supports the boys’ learning at school, giving them independence and developing skills that will help them throughout their GCSEs and later in life.

During the first half of the Autumn Term, Year 9 divided into groups of four and researched different aspects of Shiplake history. Some focused on boarding houses, the specific sports or the College itself as their research topic.

During the second half of last term they broke into pairs and chose from a list of 85 academic research topics and created a presentation using Google Slides.

Some of the research ideas Year 9 explored included: Is wind energy safe for wildlife?; Is art and music education necessary for secondary school?; What impact could climate change have on the UK?

They presented this to their peers in the Sports Hall just before Christmas.

On Friday it was parents’ turn to find out more about the FPQ projects.

Mrs Bayley, said: “The boys really enjoyed showcasing their projects and talking to their parents about the valuable lessons they have learnt so far.

“The FPQs are a great way for pupils to learn about work ethic and meeting deadlines as well as working with friends towards a common goal.

“We look forward to their final solo project, which they will present in the summer.”
