The Sports Hall was buzzing with excitement last week as business students in the Sixth Form showcased their ideas and concepts to pupils and staff across the school, at the Headmaster's Business Award Trade Fair.
The annual Headmaster's Business Award gives Year 12 business students the opportunity to demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills in a practical team-based task.
Working in teams, the students come up with an idea for a new product or service and develop a marketing plan to demonstrate its viability.
The brief for this year was to design a product or service that could be sold into the Sports and Leisure Industry.
The trade fair is the first part of the selection process for business students to bring their ideas and products to market and ‘test’ them with fellow pupils and staff.
The various teams spent time talking to attendees, and demonstrating their concepts. This year, there were lots of app related ideas, products to help with fitness and nutrition (with some delicious samples to try) and some innovative apparel business ventures.
Everyone who came along to the trade fair were given voting forms to select their first, second and third choices.
At the end of the trade fair, the votes were counted and verified. Congratulations to the following six business concepts, which go through to the next round:
V-Gains (vegan protein shakes)
Head over meals (specific diet related meal delivery service)
Stuck (an app for business people with time to spare in a foreign city)
ProCakes (protein cakes - the alternative to protein bars)
Flippin' Hoodie (the bag that turns into a hoodie)
Too good to be true (healthy chips)
The successful six teams will attend the Headmaster's Business Award final on March 19, where they will deliver a pitch in the style of the Dragons' Den. Each team will have a 10 minute slot. They will start with an opening 90 seconds speech to sell their idea to the dragons who will then ask them questions to test and challenge the viability of the product or service.
Mr Ed Olhausen, Head of Business, said: “Attendance at this year's trade fair was the highest it has ever been and many visitors from previous years commented on the quality of this year's competition saying it was the best one yet.
“There was a fantastic buzz and the business students enjoyed showing off their innovative products and services.”
