Headmaster Mr Tyrone Howe addressed parents and the wider Shiplake Community via social media yesterday afternoon to thank them for their ‘amazing’ support following the government announcement of school closures due to the COVID-19 situation.

In his address he also paid tribute to the way the pupils have conducted themselves, particularly those receiving the upsetting news they will not be taking their examinations in the summer.

He also paid full credit to the teaching staff who have worked incredibly hard over the last 10 days to put in place remote learning for the pupils.

Mr Howe said: “I am immensely proud of the staff here, I am hugely proud of the pupils and the way they have reacted. It’s really important that we maintain our academic rigour and focus over the next two weeks as it takes us into the Easter holidays.

“Above all the key message to pupils and to staff is that school is open, we may not be here, but it is open, and it’s business as usual.”

In other communications to parents this week Mr Howe commented:  “I cannot predict with any certainty the way ahead, but I am absolutely convinced that this next period of time will prove once again that the staff of Shiplake College are dynamic, highly skilled, and totally committed to the pupils of this wonderful school. What gives me enormous hope is that I feel that I am surrounded by great people who I know are good, strong, I feel close to, and trust. I wish you and your families well and thank you again for your support.”
