More than 200 pupils took part in the College's first ever Virtual Sports Day yesterday (24 June).

Because pupils were unable to participate in the usual track and field events, those in the 'Sport' group of the Year 13 ShipShape programme, used some of their lesson time to co-ordinate proceedings with six novel events which could take place at home. They filmed themselves demonstrating their events and then explained the rules in a series of videos which were posted on the College's new .

The six events were:

  • Syd's Shot Put Challenge: Sydney Burnand put together a Shot Put event using one of lockdown's most popular icons, a toilet roll! Participants had to throw the toilet roll shot put style and then measure their distances.
  • BB's Long Jump: Ellie Blois-Brooke put together a long jump event which involved jumping from a standing position and seeing how far pupils could spring.
  • Boret 25M Dash: Tom Boret asked pupils to measure out a 5 metre distance, mark each end and then run between the two points 5 times and time it.
  • Oly's Plank Test: Oly Fisby encouraged pupils to see how long they could hold a plank for - ouch!
  • Eg-Gass and Spoon: Cameron Gass's challenge was to run 25 metres with an egg and spoon.
  • The Chambrose Backward Sprint: Charlie Ambrose set his challenge to be running backwards for 100 metres!

To give a flavour of all six events, here is Year 9 pupil, Noah Scotchbrook participating in them all:

Mr Tom Walter, Head of PE, said: "Our Virtual Sports Day was a great way to end the term and it gave students a chance to take part in some competitive challenges with their peers before we break up for the summer.

"It also brought Houses together and enabled students to catch up with tutors and Housemasters in a more relaxed format.

"A real standout performance was Nicole Dunn, Year 12 Gilson, who held the plank for 15 minutes!"

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the families who got involved as home adjudicators and supporters. Thank you for sending in the fantastic photos and videos. Here is a selection of our pupils enjoying the day:
