Today's Thursday Thought was brought to us by Head of Drama, Mrs Emma Farrell who spoke on behalf of the College's Eco Committee, a group set up last year with students from each year group who are passionate about protecting our environment and all beings that inhabit it.
Mrs Farrell decided to share her thoughts on the environment after reading a quote last week from author Victoria Eriksson that really resonated with her, particularly with all of the uncertainty and fear we have lived with in recent months:
"If you ever find yourself empty from something you cannot know or name, find a stretch of ocean, a field or mountainside or even clouds or trees. Because there are 1,000 ways to fill your tired soul so you can remember how to be, how to see and most importantly how to breathe."
It got her thinking about how we have all reconnected with nature during with lockdown through walks through hills or mountains, paddling in the river or a trip to the coast, which in turn made her feel sad because of the way people on our planet mistreat the beautiful environment and wildlife around us.
She encouraged pupils to think about the amount of plastic in our oceans, killing marine life, the effect of climate change on our mountains and the amount of deforestation wiping out wildlife habitats and plant species everyday.
Mrs Farrell said: "My thought for the day is one I hope opens your eyes to the impact our individual choices have on other people, animals and plant life throughout our global community and I hope allows you to appreciate the beautiful nature we have around us even more than you already have and awaken you to the power you have to protect it, for we know not when we will need it again as much as we have done recently.
"Look at the food you eat, the clothes you wear and the brands you use and take the time to understand what their ethos is. Are they in the business of looking after this planet that has given us so much? If not, find an alternative that does. There are 1,000 ways to fill your tired soul and we have seen recently that it is people, nature, family and friendships, our pets and outdoor spaces that fill us full of happiness. Don’t be the person to take any of that away from someone else in this world because of a choice you make."
