The Revd Chris Briggs launched a special appeal in assembly this morning to raise funds for the charity Gap Africa which works with and raises funds for schools in rural Kenya.

Every Saturday in lockdown so far, pupils, parents, staff and Old Vikings have been clocking up the miles to virtually reach Kikunduku Primary School in Kenya via Shiplake College’s Strava Club. We have so far collectively covered an amazing 5,775.1km and have hit the Sudan border. We are now on the home straight to reach Kikunduku by half term.

Why are we raising money for Kikunduku?

Shiplake College has a long connection with Gap Africa and in particular the primary school in Kenya, going all the way back to the mid-90s.

In addition, secondary education in Kenya is not free and we are hoping to raise £5,000 to cover the cost of sponsoring eight pupils to attend secondary school in Kenya (about £480 per year). We are encouraging pupils to raise sponsorship for their efforts on Strava Saturdays. Any excess of this will fund projects at the Kikunduku Primary School itself.

The Rev explains more in this video:

We have until Sunday 21 February to reach our target of £5,000 to sponsor our athletes and support our link schools in Kenya. It is not too late to take part and contribute to the distance covered each Saturday - you can walk, run, cycle, or even swim! Just join the Shiplake Club on Strava here.

The Rev said: “I would like to say a huge thanks to those who have donated already. Please spread the links far and wide, and please give to this appeal, as much or as little as you can.”
