Shiplake College has begun its celebrations to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by planting five Crab Apple Trees in its grounds as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative run in partnership with the Woodland Trust.

The QGC is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

On Friday last week (28 January) The Headmaster, Mr Tyrone Howe was joined by Joint Heads of College, Casey Green and Jai Angell, Head Groundsman Reiss Phillips and Year 7 pupil George Ault, who shares his birthday with the day the Queen was coronated (6 February), for a small tree planting ceremony.

The five trees were planted on the Jubilee Lawn by the Jubilee Building, which was built to celebrate the College's own Silver Jubilee in 1984.

Mr Howe said: "It is very important to the Shiplake Community that we mark the Platinum Jubilee, and the incredible service the Queen has given to this country for so many years. We chose Crab Apple trees because of the beautiful blossom they produce in the spring. They will be a lasting reminder of this huge milestone for many years to come."

There will be a plaque placed in front of one of the trees in recognition of the Platinum Jubilee, and the school will feature on a national map on the QGC map.
