Before the half-term break, language quizzes were held in all tutor groups across the College to mark and celebrate European Day of Languages. European Day of Languages, or EDL, falls on 26 September of each year and aims to promote and highlight Europe’s rich linguistic diversity.
The European Day of Languages is an international day to raise awareness of European languages and cultures. The day, as languages do, helps us to understand each other better and overcome cultural differences. Globalisation is one of the many reasons that people increasingly need foreign language skills to work effectively within their own countries. With so many speakers of English in Europe, it is now more important than ever to be able to communicate in another language.
Language learning brings benefits to young and old - you are never too old to learn a language and to enjoy the opportunities it opens up. Even if you only know a few words of the language of the country that you visit (for example on holiday), this enables you to make new friends and contacts.
In this week's Whole School Assembly on Monday 7 November, the winners of the quizzes were announced. Presenting the final results and awards were the College's Language Leaders - Dulcie Atherton Bebbington and Louis Pottier.
The highest scoring tutor group was Miss Keli Jiggens's tutor group, with Year 7 pupil Saiveer Vedhara collecting the prize on behalf of the group.
The highest scoring pupil was Year 11's Jonathan Kowal. Jonathan has already gained a GCSE in Mandarin, receiving his certificate in the summer of 2022. He is currently studying Spanish at GCSE and is proving himself as a talented and knowledgeable linguist.
Congratulations to all of the winners and well done to everyone who took part!
