House Captain Appointments
HousesSixth Form

In the final Assembly of the Autumn Term the Headmaster announced the introduction of Year 12 House Captains and Deputy House Captains. These pupils will lead the way in their respective Houses, setting great examples to their follow peers.

Mr Howe explains "there is nothing stronger or better than pupils leading the school, sports teams, or houses in the right way. Up until now, the Head of House is a position appointed in Year 13, when in College (and Gilson) House. This role is still really important, but that person isn't able to be in the main House as often as we would like. So the top of the House is actually Year 12 – and I would like to see a core group of Year 12s leading the houses."

Some of the responsibilites of the House Captains and their deputies, working with the Year 13 Head of House, include:

• Setting the right tone and atmosphere in the house community

• Leading the House by expecting high standards from peers, setting an excellent example in terms of work and the way that they perform their duties and ensuring that others in the House carry out theirs

• Organising the pupils on a day-to-day basis both in terms of their duties and their involvement in House events, sporting, cultural or otherwise

• Being prepared and willing to speak to the whole House on occasions, passing on concerns, notices and information from the Housemaster, Matron, the Common Room, Mr Brown, Mr Jones, or even the Headmaster

• Being a prominent figure during House events, ensuring that guests are well looked after and giving a vote of thanks

• Most importantly, forming a bridge between the House and the Housemaster so that problems are quickly resolved before they become too significant. This means that the House Captain and Housemaster should be meeting formally and informally on a regular basis

Mr Howe adds: "For me, these positions are some of the most valuable positions of responsibility in the College and the pupils have an enormous opportunity to be forces for good in their Houses."

Thank you to all those who applied for the positions in their respective Houses and to the Housemasters for their help with the selection process. Congratulations go to the following pupils on their appointments:

House House Captain Deputy House Captains
Burr A Wood D Hallsworth, S Pogmore, R Pandeva

Orchard F Westbrook-Burr K Baxter, T Coles, P Whitfield

Welsh J Burgess L Morgan, R Humphris, C Scott
Gilson T May I Blake-Hurworth

In some of the Houses, the Housemasters will be rotating some positions and have other pupils lined up for the Summer Term.

Mr Howe says: "The House Captain is in a very significant position and the importance of the role should not be underestimated. Thank you for putting your hands up; I know how much your Housemasters are looking forward to working with you."
