During lockdown, Shiplake College has been helping to provide hot meals for the homeless who attend the Churches in Reading Drop-In Centre (CIRDIC), as part of the Thomas Franks Foundation's Feeding Communities Initiative

The College's caterer, Thomas Franks has donated £2,000 from it's Foundation, which will cover the cost of 1,000 fresh meals to guests who attend the centre. Shiplake College has provided its kitchen and the manpower to prepare the meals.

Today alone, 75 sausage and mash meals were prepared for the centre, with the following meals all set to be prepared in the Shiplake College kitchen over the coming weeks:

  • Cottage Pie
  • Sausage & Winter Mash
  • Smoky Bean Chilli
  • Persian Lentil & Cauliflower Stew
  • Katsu Chicken Curry & Rice
  • Kerelan Curry
  • Beef Casserole

CIRDIC supports the homeless and disadvantaged people living in the local community. The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that only a limited service can be offered for the Reading Drop-In guests, meaning these meals will be going directly to those most in need during this difficult time.

Headmaster, Mr Tyrone Howe, said: "We are delighted to be part of the Thomas Franks Feeding Communities Initiative and to offer our support to people who may be struggling with homelessness or facing financial difficulties in the local area.

"We have a long history of supporting the Reading Drop In Centre, and I know these warm meals will really make a difference to the most vulnerable members of our local community."

Frank Bothwell, Founder of Thomas Franks, said: "As our first location, the partnership with Shiplake College was always built on trust, and this charity work that is being done has cemented this. We are incredibly grateful to Shiplake College for opening its kitchen and its heart to this initiative."

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Thomas Franks Ltd, in conjunction with The Thomas Franks Foundation, have worked to deliver meals and provide supplies to those in need through the Feeding Communities project. With generous donations and continued support from their clients and suppliers, Thomas Franks have provided over 370,000 meals across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta and Portugal. These fresh, healthy, nutritious meals and food parcels have been delivered to NHS staff, key workers, and vulnerable people of all ages.
