An Enriching Conference
Geography

On Thursday 10 October, a group of our A-level geography pupils made the small trip down Reading Road to Queen Anne’s School Caversham to attend a Geography Conference.

Year 12 pupil Lucy Owen writes the following:

‘We attended the conference to listen to a series of speakers to help enrich our learning. We listened to four key speakers, as well as a short series of micro-lectures delivered by other A-level students on a range of interesting subjects such as 15-minute cities.

Speakers delved into a range of familiar topics such as informal economy in Tanzania and developmental geography, which were delivered by Nathan Salvidge and Mike Goodman from the University of Reading. We also learned about inequality amongst children in a talk delivered by Danny Dorling as he spoke about his book ‘Seven Children’. We also gained new knowledge of unfamiliar topics such as the geography of the third place, circular economies in fashion, and Norway’s potential to become the green battery for Europe and how it differs from most countries in its heavy reliance on hydroelectric power.

These lectures together helped strengthen our own geographical knowledge as well as provide us with new and interesting facts about some real-world examples, which link perfectly with what we are studying. We all enjoyed the day and found it helpful!
