Academic Geography

Geography and Travel and Tourism students from Year 12 and 13 are heading off to Iceland accompanied by the Head of Geography, Mr Ross Johnston.

The students will have five days of astonishing adventures over half term. They will be able to observe many outstanding geographic features including stunning examples of waterfalls and energetic geysers. Seeing these splendid features first hand is the best way to appreciate their beauty and to understand the enormous impact that ice and water can have on the landscape.

Hiking on a glacier is the perfect way to observe many of the glacial features they have been studying.  This is their opportunity to get up close and personal. The future benefit to these lucky students will be to use these, real examples seen in the field, to assist with creative answers, which are beautifully illustrated with examples, in their exams.

To finish off the ‘Iceland Experience’ there will also be a dip in the Blue Lagoon.

The Travel and Tourism students will also learn firsthand about the Iceland’s tourism industry which has grown considerably, in terms of economic significance, over the past 15 years. In 2015, the tourism industry contributed over five per cent to the Icelandic GDP and was responsible for nearly 30 percent of the country's export revenue.

To commemorate this extraordinarily visual trip, there will be a photography and video competition with a prize awarded to most stunning pictures.

Fingers crossed that they get to experience the Northern Lights!
