Over the past week, many pupils at the College have been taking part in the annual House Athletics Standards competition.
A preliminary event to the more competitive sports day at the end of term, the standards days give pupils an opportunity to register their best time and distance in the major track and field events. Housemasters then often use the rankings to determine the composition of their teams at the more prestigious Inter-House competition.
The New Field was packed as year groups turned out in force to represent their houses. Depending on their performances, all competitors were given an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ grade in each event. On the track, pupils raced against the clock over 100, 200 and 400m distances, before taking on the long jump and shot putt events. A large team of staff, led by Mr Crisford, helped to organise the events and record all of the results.

After all the calculations had been made, the honours were shared between Orchard, Everett and Burr Houses who claimed the Senior, Junior and Girls’ titles respectively. Skipwith finished consistently mid-table while Welsh House struggled and collected the wooden spoon in each category. There is still everything to play for at Sports Day later in the term, and it will be interesting to see if the competition results show a strong correlation.
Skipwith Housemaster Mr Keith Settle was pleased with his boys’ and girls’ efforts: “It was great to see so many pupils taking part. Regardless of where we came I was very proud to see everyone doing their best for the house. Well done!”
