We are delighted to announce the appointment of Gareth Hughes as Deputy Head Academic at Shiplake College.  He will be joining us in September 2016.

Dr Hughes, after gaining a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Geography at Oxford University, worked overseas and undertook various volunteering. He then completed his PhD in Environmental Risk at Cambridge University in 2008.

In 2015, Dr Hughes was appointed as Head of Curriculum Innovation, designing the new sixth form curriculum at Radley College, near Abingdon, for September 2016.

Previously, he had taught Geography and was an assistant housemaster at Radley, before being made the Head of Geography in 2010.

Away from the classroom, he has been heavily involved in sport over his teaching career, coaching rowing, rugby, football and Real Tennis. He also held a civilian role in the CCF and is a gold level assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

In his spare time, Dr Hughes enjoys foreign travel, surfing, cycling, triathlon, mountaineering, playing the guitar and supporting the beloved Welsh rugby team. Joining him at Shiplake will be his wife Rachel, young daughter Seren and the families working cocker spaniel Willow.

Gregg Davies, Headmaster at Shiplake commented; ‘I am very keen to continue to build the reputation of the school as a centre for innovative teaching and learning by increasing the culture of high expectations of both staff and pupils. Gareth will ensure that we continue this academic development and we look forward to welcoming him in September.’
