As a Sixth Form pupil, the subjects studied are an interesting insight into a myriad of possible future careers. Whilst the world is still very much open, with many different avenues available – from further education, to apprenticeships – it is an ideal time to experience as many different industries as possible, exploring hobbies and passion that could lead into careers. For Year 13 pupil Kate Horn, a keen interest in fashion saw her enjoy a day with Take a Break magazine, to get an insight into the fashion industry.
As part of her work experience program, Kate was treated to an ‘up close and personal’ photo shoot with Miss Sweden for the cover of the magazine. Kate is undertaking an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) for which she is creating a dissertation of 2000-3000 words on the impact of the media on teenage makeup. Kate received a fantastic insight into the ways a fashion shoot is set up and undertaken, including choosing the clothes, the makeup, the photography and even on-set editing that was taking place in order to shoot the cover. The page was then set, and Kate was shown the ropes by the editorial team, who took over for the on-page credits, stories and header to be added.
Kate’s dissertation primarily considers television and printed media adverts. It analyses the link between advertising and girls (and some boys) becoming self-conscious about their body image. The piece also contemplates the new concept of ‘vloggers,’ who can promote products widely to their young audiences. It ponders natural forms of advertising that make beauty more attainable to teenagers. Kate is keen to see more of these adverts directed at helping teenagers feel happier about themselves. The Fashion Editor for Take a Break also gave Kate an exclusive view on the industry from an insider’s point of view.
Kate has a place to study Business with Marketing at University next year following her A Levels, in Media, English Literature and BTEC in Business. She is interested in a career in Fashion Journalism and has a confirmed an internship with Newsweek in the Summer. This might be the first step on the career ladder but the future is clearly bright for such a dedicated and enthusiastic pupil!
