Lunchtime concerts have been a popular part of the timetable for over a year now; since their introduction in 2015, pupils have found that they are a fantastic way of experiencing performing live in front of an audience. Members of staff, fellow pupils and parents have also enjoyed the concerts, supporting the performers and appreciating the live music. On Friday 12 February, the lunchtime concert took on a slightly different format than usual, as Shiplake College played host to a string quartet from the Royal Academy of Music, and were treated to a small concert.

The Florizel String Quartet performed for staff, pupils and parents in the Lecture Theatre. The quartet, made up of outstanding young musicians from the prestigious Academy in London, are working on crafting careers as professional performers. As well as training at the Academy, the musicians participate in chamber music, masterclasses, ensemble performances, performance classes, study days and the art of teaching, learning the principles of teaching in a practically-based introduction. Alongside this packed schedule, the Florizel String Quartet found the time to visit Shiplake College at the invitation of Director of Music Mr Richard Curran, giving a spectacular performance to the eager crowd.

The group opened the recital with a rendition of Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.18 No.1. The audience was mesmerised; the skill and ease with which the musicians played their instruments was a joy to behold. The accomplished quartet then went on to play Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor. The piece was enchanting and expressive and the players familiar and fluent with their chosen instrument. The concert provided a relaxed and enjoyable lead into the half-term holiday. Mr Curran commented on the captivating concert, saying that ‘the repertoire was a light-hearted one, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. I’m very grateful to the Florizel String Quartet for taking the time to come to the College. I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say that we were absolutely awestruck with the professionalism and grace of the performances.’ The concert was wonderful and no doubt an inspiration for Shiplake’s own musicians!
