Year 9 boys spent a night camping under the stars in the stretch marquee last week as well as an evening of fun, activities and BBQ food.
Every year at the start of term Year 9 take part in an outdoor camp out and activities evening which usually takes place on the College’s very own Island in the Thames - Lynch Island. This year the format was adapted slightly to ensure the event could take place safely, due to current circumstances.
Throughout the week, each house had their turn to take part in activities including canoeing and climbing, as well as the camp out afterwards.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Everett, Skipwith and Orchard respectively had their camp outs. Skipwith pupil J Lucking provided this account of the evening:
“As we walked down the steps to the tent our bodies were full of different emotions. We were anxious and excited at the same time. The first thing we did was have an amazing BBQ full of burgers and hot dogs; our bodies were exploding from how full we were.
“After our food went down we went down to the new Davies Centre and did some climbing. The wall was outstanding and very enjoyable. At about 8:30pm we came back up to the astro and played some football, we were exhausted.
“At 9:00pm we were able to have a yorkie and a few marshmallows that definitely gave us some more energy. Then it was time for bed, well that was what the teachers had said but that didn't stop us playing. We were talking until about 11:00pm. The majority of people had about 4-5 hours sleep. We were shattered the next day but we survived. In the end the experience was really fun and exciting.
On Thursday it was Welsh and Burr’s turn. Mr David Rose, Welsh Housemaster camped out with the Welsh boys.
He said: “The boys settled really well on Thursday night when Welsh and Burr slept out, it was very cold but enjoyable.
“Everyone enjoyed the BBQ and the rivalry of the Burr versus Welsh football match! The highlight was definitely the chance to use the new climbing wall in the Davies Centre.
“The Welsh boys were joined by Head of College James Burgess and Welsh Head of House Fyn Brown for the evening. At the end of the climbing, the Year 9 boys enjoyed watching the two competitive year 13s have a 'climb off'. James Burgess was the winner!”
