On Thursday 22 February, the Shiplake College shooting team participated in the Harrow School's Fido May Trophy held at E. J. Churchill's shooting ground.
This prestigious national competition consisted of a challenging 50-bird ESP layout (English Sporting, Trap and Skeet) and was contested by 28 teams from the top independent schools across the country. Facing stiff competition and braving sub-zero temperatures, the Shiplake team battled hard and finished in 10th place overall. The team, in only their third competition, was again successful over more established teams from Eton, Harrow, Wellington and Marlborough and took confidence from their consistency moving forward.
Jamie Gibbs was the most successful of the team with a score of 33/50 which placed him in joint 8th place out of a total of 110 guns and James Radford was close behind with a score of 32/50. The Shiplake Shooting Team will now look ahead to a number of competitions over the next two terms and focus on maintaining their status as one of the top ten school shooting teams in the country.
Clay pigeon shooting is offered at Shiplake as a paid extra-curricular activity and the team are always keen to recruit new and old guns - please contact Paul Green for more information or to give it a shot.
