Last week, the Senior House Hockey Tournament drew to a close after two days of gruelling competition and, for some, commiseration.
On Monday 19 February, the first games of the Senior House Hockey Tournament began in true Shiplake style. Both Orchard and Skipwith houses were each split into two teams, due to their high numbers, and the games began!
Skipwith’s Wells-Furby faced off against Burr in the first of 10 games in round one. Sophie Weldon won player of the match and Wells-Furby came away with a 2-1 win. Next up was the turn of Everett and Welsh, who were beaten 3-1 by the Everett side. Goals came from Booth, Lynskey and Paine and Gorringe for Welsh.
The day went on and the tension built as mixed results made it impossible to tell who would walk away victoriously! MVPs of round one included Harvey Hendry, Olly Rouse-Roberts and girls’ hockey legend Lauren McNally.
Two and a half weeks later, the second round took place, and with Skipwith’s Wells-Furby, Everett and Orchard’s Lapping all on two wins each, it was all to play for. The first game saw Burr smash Everett with a 3-0 win for their second victory to level-out the playing field even more.
Wells-Furby then came back with a 2-0 win over Orchard’s Lapping to give them the advantage. Draws followed; between Eggar and Welsh and Everett and Bevan, but this gave Burr the chance to shine as they came through with a 2-0 win against Lapping and a 1-0 win against Eggar!
At this point, it was tense. The only team to have not won a game was Eggar, essentially knocking them out of the running.
The final scores at the end of the tournament were as follows:
- 7th place with 3 points – Skipwith’s Eggar
- 6th place with 4 points – Orchard’s Lapping
- 5th place with 5 points – Welsh
- 4th place with 6 points – Orchard’s Bevan
- 3rd place with 8 points – Everett
- 2nd place with 12 points – Burr
- 1st place with 16 points – Skipwith’s Wells Furby
Head of Hockey, Mr Tom Walter, had this to say on the tournament. ‘Another fantastic afternoon of action packed house hockey in the cage, with a record 51 goals being scored across the tournament. Congratulations to Skipwith Wells-Furby who take the crown this year, following on from Skipwith Eggar’s success in 2017. A proud Mr Duncan was spotted on the side-line, bursting into tears as a 2-0 win over Orchard Bevan confirmed that the title would be remaining within the walls of Skipwith House for yet another year. Mr Duncan has taken full credit for his side’s victory and is said to be looking for an improved contract in the near future.
‘Special mentions go to the tournament Golden Stick winner, Jack Rees, who scored 6 goals in 6 games, closely followed by Georgie Stebbings on 5. Also, the Ballon D’Stick winners Joe Booth, Jack Rees and Callum Creighton for their 3 MVP awards.’
