For the second set of results since government forms, the percentage of Shiplake College pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at grade 9-4 has increased from 86% in 2018 to 94%.

Headmaster, Gregg Davies, comments:

“I am pleased to see that the percentage of top 9 and 8 grades has been maintained at 11%, with the overall percentage of grades 9-4 (the equivalent of A-C) at 88% also in line with last year’s 89%. The increase to 94% for pupils achieving five or more grades 9-4 means that the vast majority of our boys have a strong collection of results.

“Particular congratulations to E Atkinson, R Cameron-Martin, A Coles, J Durcan, T Craven, B Thornber and S Nike for achieving at least eight results at grade 7 or above, and the numerous pupils gaining straight 9-6 grades. There are a significant number of superb individual success stories for this year group, illustrating that those with the right work ethic can meet and exceed expectations. Indeed the old adage of you get what you work for rings true in more ways than one and despite the best efforts of our staff, a small percentage of boys this morning may be wishing they had heeded warnings more seriously and taken the offers of guidance and support.

“My congratulations to art, biology, chemistry, English, history, music, physics and religious studies for very strong grade 9-4 performances. History, computing and ICT also achieved excellent value-added scores of 0.9 or 0.8, meaning pupils received almost a grade better than their baseline data indicated they would in Year 9. 23% of physics results, and 15% of chemistry, were the top grade 9s; two pupils achieved 8,9,9 in their triple science and one a 9,9 in their double-award science.

“This continues to be a challenging period for the whole education sector, with major changes by the government to the grading system and syllabi, but this has been dealt with professionally by our teaching staff and as ever I am grateful for their dedication and genuine desire to deliver an excellent all-round education to our pupils.”

Tyrone Howe, who succeeds Mr Davies as Headmaster in September, adds: “The majority of pupils have achieved the grades required for their chosen Sixth Form subjects and my thanks to Mr Richard Curtis, Mr Paul Jones and Mr Richard Ebbage for their work in ensuring pupils start with the most suitable combination of courses in September. I look forward to welcoming those boys returning to Shiplake for the Sixth Form and to the boys and girls joining the College from other schools.”
