We celebrated the wonderful year of highs we have had in girls' sport at their annual formal dinner this week. With awards, speeches and even a specially written poem, the girls celebrated all their fantastic achievements this year in style.

During the evening, Head of Girls' Sport, Miss Chloe Mordue reflected on what has been an amazing year, including Shiplake history being made in the netball league:

Some of my highlights from the year have been:

  • Our first ever Hockey Night Lights!
  • Having two football teams this year and playing six competitive matches
  • Having a bigger variety in the offering of sport for the fitness girls, such as boxing, archery and climbing
  • The girl rowers have had a fantastic start to their season winning the Schools' Head of River. The Eight also won their event and the Second Quad came second out of all the second boats
  • Jess Weir has also had a fantastic start within the GB trialing system and has made amazing progress in rowing this year
  • Inter-House Netball Tournament this year – it was a great afternoon
  • The Gilson v College Netball match
  • The Rowers V Netballers match
  • Our first ever Netball Night Lights!
  • The A Team won the Plate Tournament at Lord Wandsworth
  • The A Team beat seven other schools, gained the highest goal difference in the League and WON the Netball League - something previously not done before by Shiplake!

This all makes me very proud to be Head of Girls’ Sport here at Shiplake. I really hope hearing about all of this and hearing the sport year re-caps from your Captains makes you all feel proud of all you have done this year – whether you are leaving Shiplake in Year 13 and can look back on your broad sport experience from Shiplake, or whether you are in Year 12 and looking forward into next year and getting involved in even more to come.

Captain of Girls' Sport, Georgina Garner also surprised everyone with a specially written poem about the year.

Georgina's Poem

We started the season with just a ball and a stick,

Training hard to play hockey, we picked it up quick.

To win our first game, it felt like a party,

While watching the skills of Abi McCarthy.

Outside in our skorts, we tended to freeze,

While keeping Mr Bradley’s formation of cheese.

Roisin, our star goalie, rarely let a goal in,

Kicking the ball with the pads on her shin.

Our defenders were fab, doing great at their task,

Despite looking funny in their plastic face mask.

Eve Browne in attack and Izzy Wood too,

Taking long shots, through the air the ball flew.

Then we took part in the Hockey Night Lights,

Our standard of play really reached a new height.

We scored 5 goals against the school of St Jo’s

Hugging and laughing as the final sound goes.

Then our fab team of Girls' Football was made ,

And thank God for Mr Cooper who came to our aid.

Eva Harris saved goals despite being small,

While I couldn’t help but to still catch the ball!

We leant to kick far and we learnt to run fast,

We learnt to header and we learnt to pass.

Issy Hepburn and Lambert led us all well,

But I won’t miss those bibs that made us all smell!

Next, we played Netball and split into our teams,

Maddie, Milly and Sophie, Captains of our dreams.

Our league was tough but we put up a good fight,

To then win overall and give Blue Coat a fright!

A season of trick shots and skill with the ball,

Maddie in attack, rarely missing at all.

The Staff vs Students was our next match to play,

Then our College game, left the boys in dismay.

In our Inter-House Netball, we all had a bawl,

Welsh were victorious and I'm not salty at all!

Then our netball matches finished for the year,

A season full of laughs, and a season full of cheer.

I hope you enjoyed this poem, although pretty long,

But at least I didn’t try to sing it in a song!

You all look lovely today in this gentle evening light,

Good luck for your exams, I hope you enjoy your night.
