Cricket

Girls v Reddam House

On Wednesday, Shiplake played their first girls' cricket match of the season against Reddam House. Shiplake played extremely well in the sunshine, and secured a fantastic win of 101 runs over 16 overs, compared to Reddam's 88. The player of the match given by Reddam was E Pendlebury for her excellent fielding and C Wapshare for her batting. E Lambert also played well being our wicketkeeper for the match. P Sanderson bowled very well making it hard for the other team to hit it as well as getting some of the players out. Well done to all the girls who played in this match and thank you to everyone who was supporting from the side.

Report by E Harris, Cricket Captain

1sts v South Oxfordshire Amateurs

The 1st XI put in a superb performance in their declaration match victory against the South Oxfordshire Amateurs, showing clearly how much they have matured and improved in the past year. T Rossouw took his first 5 wicket haul for Shiplake and top scored with 34 in our successful run chase.

Block Fixtures v Reading Blue Coat

The 1st XI backed this up with a win in yet another nail biting encounter with Reading Blue Coat on Saturday. The determination O Stalder showed in his innings of 55 was admirable and Blue Coat were unable to chase 136 as a result of some miserly bowling by J Rogers, T Rossouw and T Angell

The Lower School 1st XI, U15As and the 2nd XI also enjoyed wins against Blue Coat. The standout performance was B Stokes who fell just one short of his century as Shiplake posted an enormous 192/6 in 20 overs. C Cooper top scored for the Lower School, A Long guided the 2nd XI to victory 32 not out and O Beaney had the best figures with the ball for the U14As.

U15 v Reading Blue Coat

Shiplake U15A batted first and B Stokes scored 99 from 42 balls. L Crerar 42. A large score of 192 from 20 overs. We restricted Blue Coat to 164 with good bowling from C Burnett, in particular. An excellent win.

Tennis

On Tuesday an incredibly close match started this week’s tennis fixtures. The Colts team made up dominantly of Year 9s faced Leighton Park’s impressive Year 9 team. The first round of matches against opposite pairs went decidedly to Shiplake three sets to love. Fortunes turned in the second round and went 2 sets to 1 to Leighton Park, putting Shiplake 4 sets to two overall. In the third Leighton Park round managed to claw back two sets putting us even, before we clinched a 5 sets to 4 victory. B Demery and J Lamburn one all of their rubbers with exemplary tennis, L Pedrett and T Broomfield made excellent debuts on the Colts team.

2nd vs 3rd 3:6 Shiplake
3rd vs 1st 4:6 Shiplake

Round 2:

2nd vs 1st: 6-4 Leighton Park

Overall 5-4 to Shiplake

It was super Saturday for the tennis club, with three fixtures against The Oratory. The Colts team were playing away and Shiplake put up a commendable fight against a very strong Oratory squad. The first round of fixtures saw Shiplake take a 2-1 lead, but Oratory came back strong in the second round - winning every match and leaving the score at 4-2 in the hosts' favour. Despite winning two of the final matches, Oratory ran out eventual winners (5-4). J Hind and J McFarlane were Shiplake's star pairing, managing to win two of their matches.

A similar story played out on our grass courts, in our first mixed doubles match in the last three years. A Townsend and B Fundell put up a valiant effort but were defeated by a strong pair, leaving all hopes on S DiCuffa and F Fisher, who despite their best efforts, and in a gruelling contest lost their rubber. 2:0 to Oratory but good fun was had by all!

The Oratory didn’t get it all their way however, as they crashed into the so far irresistible force of the Boys' First Team. The first pair for Oratory, one against our third and second pair, but they were the only victories their team managed - with an overall 7 matches to 2 victory to Shiplake.

Round 1:
1st vs 2nd 6-3 Oratory
2nd vs 3rd 2-6 Shiplake
3rd vs 1st 1-6 Shiplake

Round 2:
1st vs 3rd 6-1 Oratory
2nd vs 1st: 1-6  Shiplake
3rds vs 2nd: 2-6 Shiplake

Round 3:
1st vs 1st 4-6 Shiplake
2nd vs 2nd 1-6 Shiplake
3rds vs 3rds 5-7 Shiplake

Overall 7-2 to Shiplake
