In Monday's Whole School Assembly, Head of Art Miss Keli Jiggens announced the winners of the recent Whole School Black and White, Art and Photography Competition. Additionally, there was a special announcement about a new upcoming College art competition.
On the Black and White, Art and Photography Competition, Miss Jiggens said:
"Before the summer, Year 11 art scholar Josh Marthinusen launched the Black and White Art and Photography competition. We were delighted with all of the wonderful entries, which included a large range of paintings, drawings, mixed media and photography entries.
All entries will be put up in the Great Hall today, which include the two winning pieces, one for photography and one art piece, as chosen by Josh.
The winner of the photography prize goes to Year 9 pupil, Will Smith, for his historical town rooftop photo. And the winner for the art prize goes to Year 8 pupil, Finleigh Padrick, for his beautiful spray-painted moon."
Miss Jiggens then invited Monty Walker (Year 12) up to announce the next Whole School Art Competition. Now renowned for his assembly speeches, Monty did not disappoint and said the following:
"Headmaster,
Learned teachers,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Boys and girls,
I get this gig every year at this time,
My name is Walker, Monty Walker and I'm an art and design scholar.
Go wild, go crazy for the art challenge 2022 - that I've called...Mould It!
We challenge everyone in the school, your teachers, your siblings, even you Headmaster, to produce a sculpture in clay to challenge Rodin, Henry Moore, Michaelangelo.
Get your clay and get moulding, get painting, get busy.
As William Shakespeare said,
'But clay and clay differs in dignity. Whole dust is both alike.'
I've got no idea what that means.
But the gantlet of creation has now been thrown down.
Adulation, fame and fortune are available for the lucky few.
Come to the Art Department to collect your coloured clay to take part.
Get inventive!
Get busy!
Get moulding!"
Open to the Shiplake College community, the deadline for entries is Monday 14 November. Please come to the Art Department to sign up and collect your colour air-drying clay. Then, watch the video in the Flickr Stream below and follow the instructions - don't open the bag until you are ready to make it as it dries quickly!
Of course, there are prizes to be won and so as Monty said in assembly - mould it, and good luck to everyone who gets involved!
