On Thursday 30 March, our Year 13 A-level drama pupils completed the practical component of their A-level exam where they were assessed by an external examiner. Performing in the Tithe Barn, our pupils, experienced performers in their own rights, were faced with the daunting task of performing under exam conditions for their qualifications.

The A-level exam is the second component the students are assessed on and are provided with a selection of stimuli from the exam board including famous quotes, artwork and songs. The members of each group choose one, which will then inspire an original piece of writing and their choice of a published text. Groups this year chose an artwork by M C Escher.

Having studied a variety of practitioners across the A-level course, the groups chose two contrasting styles of theatre - one for the devised piece and one for the scripted.

Below are the pieces performed:

  • Lewis O'Donoghue, Louis Poundall, and Esme Young - Eye of the Beholder (Devised)
  • P Kay, Max Noakes, and William Tayler - Family (Devised)
  • P Kay and Esme Young - The Wasp, Morgan Lloyd Malcolm
  • Louis Poundall and William Tayler - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams
  • Max Noakes and Lewis O'Donoghue - The Pillowman, Martin McDonagh

Speaking after the performances, Head of Drama, Mrs Farrell, said:

'Each group developed some of the most mature and well written devised work I have seen in many years and their artistic ability to engage and interest an audience in their writing and of course their acting skills was just phenomenal. We are very proud of each of them.'

Please enjoy a highlights video of the performances below. A photo gallery of the showcase is also available.
