Shiplake College’s Class of 2021 received their Sixth Form results this morning, a number coming into school to collect their results in person, whilst others logged in online before heading to the College for a special results day lunch with their parents, who themselves have hardly been unable to visit the school over the last two years and could not participate in any of the traditional leavers' end of term events.
The results are a reflection of the judgments made by teachers as part of the Teacher-Assessed Grades (TAGs) process, required in response to the cancellation of the exams due to the COVID-pandemic. The Headmaster, Tyrone Howe, commented: “I am delighted with the way that the Shiplake staff and pupils responded to the TAGs process, which added further pressure and workload in what was already the most challenging academic year for everyone. Rigour is at the heart of all that we try to do at Shiplake and I commend the staff for their tireless efforts in arriving at an evidence-based process that was robust and fair and ultimately did justice to the efforts and abilities of the Shiplake pupils - those pupils showed resilience in spades and deserve our warmest congratulations.”
A number of subjects were chosen to be sampled as part of the external quality-assurance process but no changes were made to the TAGs submitted by the College in June, showing that the results are based on real evidence of the hard work that the pupils have put in over the course of such a challenging Sixth Form. This also reflects the professionalism of the teaching staff to provide the most positive learning experience to their pupils.
70% of grades were A*-A or equivalent, 85% A*-B and 98% were A*-C. Particular mention to Biology, Chemistry and History for 100% A*-B grades, with Art, Design Technology, Further Maths, PE, Photography, Physics, Politics, Psychology and Religious Studies all receiving 100% A*-C. Both French candidates received A*s and Drama’s three candidates achieved A*-As. In vocational subjects Criminology’s first set of results saw 100% A*-B, 100% of Tech Engineering results were Distinction or above and 92% of BTEC results in Business, ICT, Sport and Travel and Tourism were Distinction or above.
91% of pupils were offered places at their first choice university and 100% of applicants were offered places at their first or second choice. Exeter, Nottingham, Loughborough and Surrey feature highly and Nicole Dunn, who achieved two A*s and one A, is going to Princeton University in the United States. 40% of university destinations are Russell Group universities, with 70% of pupils going to a university ranked in the top-third.
Mila Akopova, James Burgess, An Cheng, Anna May Knight, Trixie May and Laura Pasmore all received 3A*s (or equivalent). A number achieved all A-A*s (or equivalent) including Katie Baxter, Lucas Booth, Alex Coles, Tom Craven, Freddie Diver, Joe Durcan, Max Giggins, Casper Good, Sam Green, Dan Hallsworth, George Hinton, George Lucas, Will Symons, Elizabeth Tang, Luke Taylor, Antonia Tunnicliffe and Angus Wood.
Congratulations to all the pupils on their results.
