Last week saw our first girls' hockey fixture of the academic year with an away match against Claire's Court School. Rugby fixtures continued with a full complement of all year groups playing Lord Wandsworth College in matches at home and away. It's been a great start to sport at Shiplake for 2021-22!
Hockey
On Wednesday 23 September, the brand new girls' Shiplake hockey team was finally able to play a fixture for the first time in 2 years! The girls were excited to get back on the pitch and had a drive to win. They demonstrated great sportsmanship as the Claire's Court girls only had 9 players so 2 of the Shiplake girls played for the other team each quarter. So a huge thank you goes to those who battled against their own team! The first quarter was predominantly Shiplake possession but unfortunately no goals were scored. As the girls played on, I Wood scored an amazing goal from the post due to a strong pass by E Browne. This put Shiplake in the lead 1-0 by half time. In the final quarter, the game dropped to 9-a-side so the Claire's Court girls played with just their teammates. Again, possession was mainly in Shiplake hands and G Garner scored another goal to take us to a 2-0 victory. Special mention goes to A McCarthy who got player of the match and M Fisher, who as the newly appointed hockey captain, led the team to victory after having only a few training sessions as a group. The girls are eager to get stuck into their next match next week and excited about the season this term.

Rugby - Shiplake v Lord Wandsworth College
1st XV - Mr Beckett
Wednesday evening saw the first match under floodlights for the 1st XV. After the disappointment of last week the boys were determined to get back to winning ways. Tries by H Kunzig, S Bourke, C Stewart and J Cheetham (with 2 conversions by J Rogers) put the score at 24-0 at half time. The second half was one to forget; not great rugby by both sides and some changes in the 1st XV backline allowed LWC to score two tries. Final score 24-10. Next match is in the U18 Schools Cup v Dr Challoner's Grammar School on Wednesday 29 September, 2.00pm KO on New Field.
After the break Shiplake came out strong bringing the score back to 15-15. After a long stalemate in the second half, Shiplake’s strong defence was bypassed by a brilliant kick chase which led to a excellent try from LWC. Despite excellent physicality and carries from A Coleman, tackling from J Macleod and great leadership from B Fundell the late try from LWC was enough to see out the game as a loss 20-15.
MOTM - H Harper
The U16s struggled to get up for the midweek game at Lord Wandsworth. A lack of team cohesiveness and possession meant for a hard day. There were glimmers of potential in the 3 tries scored. L Burwash made some excellent runs in attack and L Rouse-Roberts worked tirelessly.
U16B - Mr Lawson
With a very short warm up and this being our first full game, we struggled with organisation and game management in the first half. However our defensive line improved and with committed tackling, we began to put pressure on LWC. Strong runs from N Scotchbrook and T Grewal together with top tacklers; M Wallace and J Yates led to more possession for Shiplake and our backs linked well leading to two great tries from B Watkins and E Thomas. Final score 55-10 to LWC.
After a slow start, the A team took their opportunities with A Malcolm scoring twice to keep Shiplake in the running. H Edwards scored to make the score level. H Benton came from the bench and showed some grit. He was rewarded with a try to give Shiplake the lead. Shiplake then held on to win 26-19.
U15B - Mr Miller
The U15Bs got their first win of the season, with a hard fought 17-12 win over LWC. The first half went to Shiplake, with G Forsyth finishing brilliantly from close range, and B Stokes showing great skill and pace to break the line and score between the posts. Lord Wandsworth came back strong in the second half, but some great tackling from J Dawn, O Morris and L Wilson kept the opposition out.
